Normod Carbon and SMDERI-QET partner on CO₂ logistics for maritime carbon capture

Grenaa, Denmark, 12 December 2025 – Normod Carbon, a Northern European pioneer in CO₂ aggregation, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with SMDERI-QET, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, to develop logistics and infrastructure for onboard carbon capture and storage (OCCS) in international shipping.

The partnership links proven OCCS technology with Northern Europe’s emerging CO₂ hub network. Normod Carbon’s planned CO₂ hub in Grenaa, Denmark, is expected to play a central role as a reception, aggregation and transfer point for CO₂ captured onboard vessels.

Joint logistics development
Under the MoU, Normod Carbon and SMDERI-QET will jointly develop the value chain for CO₂ captured onboard vessels equipped with OCCS technology. The collaboration will focus on ship-to-ship transfer of liquefied CO₂ in port, onward transport to Normod Carbon’s hubs for intermediate storage and aggregation, and final delivery to permanent sequestration or utilisation sites.

The parties will assess technical concepts, safety and regulatory requirements, and commercial models for shipowners calling at Northern European ports, with the aim to develop a bankable logistics solution for captured CO₂ and offer shipowners a seamless, verifiable chain from capture to storage.

“Onboard carbon capture is emerging as one of the most promising pathways to accelerate decarbonisation in the maritime sector,” said Jan Lien, CEO of Normod Carbon. “By integrating SMDERI-QET’s proven capture and transfer technologies with our Northern European CO₂ infrastructure, we are closing the loop from capture at sea to safe, permanent storage on land.”

SMDERI-QET has successfully demonstrated a complete OCCS system, including amine-based CO₂ ai earlier this year. The new collaboration will adapt and extend this model to the European market. “This partnership wicapture, liquefaction and the world’s first ship-to-ship LCO₂ offloading in Shanghth Normod Carbon represents a crucial step toward globalising our OCCS value chain,” said Su Yi, General Manager of SMDERI-QET. “Together, we will offer shipowners a scalable pathway from onboard capture to verified storage, ensuring that captured CO₂ is managed transparently and sustainably.”

Anchored in international cooperation
The partnership builds on ongoing Denmark–China cooperation on green shipbuilding and maritime decarbonisation and supports both companies’ strategies for reducing emissions from international shipping.

Normod Carbon’s Grenaa CO₂ hub on Denmark’s east coast is being developed as an open-access reception, aggregation and distribution hub for CO₂ captured from industrial, biogenic and maritime sources in the North Sea and Baltic Sea. OCCS volumes are expected to be an additional stream on top of Normod Carbon’s core industrial and biogenic CO₂ volumes.
The hub forms part of Normod’s ambition to build a leading network of CO₂ hubs in Northern Europe, with the ambition to aggregate up to 20 million tonnes per year over time for storage or utilisation and to enable more carbon capture projects to reach final investment decision. By integrating maritime CO₂ into this shared infrastructure, Normod Carbon aims to reduce cost and complexity for shipowners and storage providers, while improving visibility and verification of CO₂ flows across the value chain.

About Normod Carbon
Normod Carbon is Northern Europe’s CO₂ aggregator, developing shared logistics infrastructure to collect CO₂ from multiple emitters and route it cost efficiently to permanent storage. By securing strategic port access, building intermediate storage and partnering across the value chain, Normod enables scalable, bankable carbon management. Headquartered in Denmark, the company is developing Northern Europe’s largest planned CO₂ hub at Port of Grenaa and targets >20 mtpa of full chain services by 2035. Normodcarbon.com.
